Signs of Spring

Although still cold, the last week has been dry and even sunny!  Spring is creeping in slowly, and has been for the past month but it has been hard to notice.  At least we have been clear of snow down here for a while, unlike much of the north of England and Scotland.

Although this blog isn't going to be a list of first sightings, it is hard not to record the signs of spring.  Here's a few photos taken over the last few weeks.

A close up of some hazel catkins, and below the massed effect.  Hazel is wind pollinated and the dangling catkins shed their pollen in the breeze.

Snowdrops are not actually native flowers, but thought to have been brought from elsewhere in Europe in the sixteenth century.  Since then they have been widely planted and have escaped from the confines of the garden to naturalize in many woodlands.  So a non-native that we can all appreciate and not have to try and eradicate!
Another woodland bulb, this time the bright green new growth of ramsons or wild garlic.  Where it occurs, it grows in profusion and will scent the woods with the smell of garlic.

Finally from my garden a Corsican hellebore flower, pale green but remarkable in its structure.
